Peterborough students step into “A Day in My Shoes” for disability awareness
More than 160 students from Kaawaate East City School took part in “A Day in My Shoes” at the YMCA in Peterborough on December 3, an event held by the Council for Persons with Disabilities to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
The program offered a series of hands-on workshops led by people with lived experience, giving kids a chance to navigate simulated blindness, learn about hearing loss and sign language, and try mobility exercises using wheelchairs.
Organizers say the goal is to help young people understand the realities many residents face and to build empathy through direct experience.
While accessibility has improved in recent years, CPD chair Cody McIntyre said education remains key to shaping a more inclusive community in the years to come.
